What is the recommended Jumper Setting for Hard Disk Drive (HDD) installation?
Solution

Mvix works like an external enclosure when connected to your Windows-based PC. External Mass Storage enclosures require the jumpers to be set to SINGLE, MASTER, or CABLE SELECT (CS) setting. (Some HDDs tend to work best if all jumpers are removed from the HDD).

If an HDD is installed without the appropriate jumper setting, you PC may show common errors like: ERROR CODE 10 when connected to Mvix. Your computer may also try to load the Cypress AT2LP RC58 driver when Mvix is connected via USB.

Typically, this problem is caused by an improperly set jumper. Please refer to the HDD manufacturer's documentation or user's manual to identify the correct jumper setting for your HDD. Most drives function correctly when the jumper is set to the "Master" position, but this is not always the case. If you receive this error, try changing your jumpers to the following (in order):

  1. Cable Select or CS (if available)
  2. No jumper
  3. Master (on some rare occasions, changing some drives off of the master setting and then back solves this problem.)
  4. Slave

Most hard drives have their jumper information printed on them, but some do not. If yours does not, please refer to the manufacturer's website or documentation that accompanied the drive for assistance.

To change the jumper(s) on a harddrive, follow these instructions:

Your jumper should look something like this:
Jumper1

Use some kind of straight object (a butter knife works fine for this) to pry the jumper straight up:
Jumper2

There shouldn't be much resistance, and the jumper should slide up easily. You should now have nothing on the jumpers, like so:
Jumper3

After this, slide the jumper back on in the position it needs to be in:
Jumper4

Push down until it is as far as it will go. It should now be in it's new position:
Jumper5

Repeat the above steps as needed until the drive is properly recognized or you have tried all of the above options.

For reference, here are some common jumper setting diagrams of popular brands:

Maxtor and Quantum Jumper Settings

Seagate Barracuda Jumper Settings

Western Digital EIDE Jumper Settings

Hitachi Storage Jumper Settings

In our experience, over 95% of Mvix-USB interface, Mvix-PC connectivity issues are related to incorrect jumper settings.
